How to enable Branching Logic in a Learning Path Module (Admin)
When authoring a Learning Path module, you can add a Selection Option Component. These include the following components:
- Radio Set
- Dropdown Menu
- Checkbox Set
- True or False
Within each Selection Option Component, you can enable Branching Logic pathways based on the answers selected! These pathways can allow for more complex answer structures in your modules, leading your learners to answer follow-up questions in responses to the answers they choose!
To allow for branching logic pathways, first add one of the Selection Option Components listed above. Then select 'Enable branching based on answers.'
Doing so will reveal an 'Add Branch' button beside each answer choice within your component, wherein you can create a branch from that specific answer choice. To add a branch, click 'Add Branch' and then click either 'New Branch' or choose from one of your existing branches, if you have already created one.
When you select 'New Branch,' you will be given the option to choose a component type to open when that answer is submitted by a learner.
You will then find the Branch listed below the original component you were working on (see example below):
Example Branching Logic Pathway
For example, you may want the learner to answer a question about something they have learned about. When they submit an incorrect answer, you may want a resource to appear explaining the correct answer.
In this example, the correct answer is 3. So we will first enable 'Grading' to select '3' as the correct answer choice.
To enable branching pathways, we will then select 'Enable branching based on answers.'
Next, we'll choose 'Add Branch' for answer '1' and then choose 'Resources' as the branching component, making sure to add the specific Resource to the branching component.
Then for answer '2', we'll click the dropdown arrow beside 'Add Branch' and choose Branch 1 to use the same branching component as answer choice 1.
Now when the learner chooses the incorrect answer, the resource will appear as a component under the original question. If they choose the correct answer, they will be able to move on to the next question.
